Azerbaijan’s President Sets Family Power, Appoints Wife As His Deputy

The president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has appointed his wife Mehriban as his deputy, seems to be wants to establish the power of family, while an opposition leader strictly condemned his move.


The 55-year-old Aliyev is son of Heydar Aliyev, who was previous president of the nation, whose rule stretched back into Soviet times. Aliyev also serves as the Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party and the head of the National Olympic Committee, though took presidency of the oil and gas exporter in 2003.

The 4th Azeri president’s wife Mehriban belongs to one of the most wealthiest and powerful families in the nation, the Pashayevs.

When it comes to abilities of the first lady of Azerbaijan, she came out kind, clever, veteran, and very professional, hence people of the nation love her so much, Aliyev laid out during a meeting of Security Council of Azerbaijan.

After Mehriban’s appointment as deputy broke the riots as a large number of people showed their bad behaviors outside the capital city of county. Although, current president of the nation has expressed his hold on power when low prices for main export of homeland as oil hit Azerbaijan’s currency and rise in staple goods like flour emerged.

However, eyewitnesses told reporters police arrived at spot when uprising were started outside Baku, took in their custody dozens of people. The revelation regarding Mehriban Aliyeva’s appointment as deputy was carried out via the presidential website on 21 February.

The 52-year-old Azeri first lady is a deputy chairperson of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, even chief of the Heidar Aliyev Foundation that considers a large nongovernmental organization.

Mehriban is daughter of Arif Paşayev, who ruled newly independent Azerbaijan with an iron fist from 1993 until 2003, although passed away in December 2003.
